In honor Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Shirley Mathis McBay. Dr. McBay is the University of Georgia’s first Black doctoral graduate and the first woman to earn a doctoral degree in mathematics from the university. McBay graduated five years after the university was desegregated in 1961.
She graduated Hutto High School in Bainbridge, Georgia, at 15. Four years later, she graduated Paine College in Augusta, Georgia with a degree in chemistry. She started teaching at Spelman College after graduating. During this time, she also pursued master’s degrees in chemistry and math at Atlanta University, where she met her future husband, Henry McBay.
After earning her doctoral degree in Mathematics at UGA, she began teaching mathematics at Spelman College.
McBay went on to be a leading voice for diversity in science and math education. In 1980, she was named dean of student affairs at MIT, where she was once again the first Black person and the first woman ever appointed to this position. She was also chair of the National Science Foundation’s Committee on Equal Opportunity in Science and Engineering.
The Science Library at the University of Georgia was named for McBay in December 2021 in honor of her legacy as a passionate leader in STEM who was committed to fostering access for all.

This morning, we observed a very chilly Arbor Day Ceremony held this year at Cheney Griffin Park. Mayor Edward Reynolds, City Council, Georgia Forestry Commission and city staff all gathered together to plant two live oaks trees to commemorate the designated day. The trees were generously donated by the Fred B. Hand, III Family as part of the Planting for the Future Campaign. The campaign's purpose is to raise funds to purchase, plant and maintain trees, shrubs and other plants to beautify Bainbridge.

For Black History Month, we honor Luther Conyers, a pioneer who made history as the first Black person elected to Bainbridge's City Council in 1978. With a legacy of leadership, he became the longest-serving councilman in Bainbridge’s history at the time of his retirement. A proud Korean War veteran, he earned the Korean Service Medal with bronze stars. Luther is also a retired educator, and a member of the Savannah State University Hall of Fame and the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame. His dedication and impact continue to inspire. #BlackHistoryMonth #LegacyOfLeadership

“Our focus this time will be on bringing people together regardless of our differences and to foster a culture of acceptance over tolerance in the wake of today’s political and social climate. We’re still trying hard to stay in step with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous ‘I HAVE A DREAM’ speech, says Rahn d. Fudge, Creator and Executive Producer of the BHM RISE! Week and 1979 Bainbridge High School graduate born in nearby Donalsonville and who currently resides in San Francisco, Calif.

Tell Me Something Good Friday! The Chamber of Commerce recently spread some sweetness by donating delicious desserts to our hardworking city employees. City Manager Roy Oliver went the extra mile, personally delivering the treats to our Street Department while they were out working hard on the job. The team was beyond appreciative, and the gesture truly brightened their day! A big thank you to the Chamber and to Roy for showing our dedicated workers some love and support.

We spotted Downtown Patrol Zone PSO Shannon Fisher assisting an elderly visitor find his way to the particular retail store he had driven to Bainbridge to shop. Officer Fisher went further than just giving him directions, but she escorted him to the front door of the merchant.
