Essay Contest Cover Picture

April 21-27 is celebrated as Georgia Cities week by the Georgia Municipal Association and gives cities the opportunity to:

  • Share information about the valuable services we provide to residents, including an inside look into city operations and how cities positively impact their quality of life

  • Highlight successful community projects and infrastructure enhancements

  • Connect residents with one another

Going into its 25th year, Georgia Cities Week is also an opportunity to celebrate community achievements and recognize volunteers and city employees. This year, we welcome back the “If I Were Mayor…” Essay Contest. The contest is open to all 8th grade students in Decatur County. There will be a winner from each school and winners will be recognized at the City Council meeting on April 16, in print and social media and will also receive a cash prize.

I have attached a flyer regarding the essay contest that also contains the rules. Essays will be judged based on the following areas: essay relation to topic, displayed knowledge about local government, the role of the Mayor and proper use of grammar.

In order to make this week a success, we need as much participation as possible. Other events to coincide with Georgia Cities Week will be a coloring contest and a Touch a Truck event Saturday April 27 at the Earle May Boat Basin.
